The Russell Trust

The Fife based Russell Trust has been a generous supporter of the University for many years.  It was founded in 1947 in memory of Captain Pat Russell, an alumnus who was killed in the Second World War. His father and brother, both called David Russell and both associated with the university, established the trust – many St Andrews graduates will have fond memories of their time at the David Russell Apartments (formerly David Russell Hall).  The Trust’s funds come mainly from its ownership of about a quarter of the otherwise employee-owned Markinch papermakers, Tullis Russell. Over the years the University of St Andrews has been grateful for generous contributions from The Russell Trust that established the David Russell Scholarships, and helped to provide resources for the Library computer clusters, MUSA and underwater archaeological research.

In 2002 the Trust established The Russell Trust Development Awards (Staff). The awards are open to all members of University staff seeking support for a work related project.  Since the awards were established, over £100,000 has been disbursed across over 40 projects.  The types of projects for which funding is sought is wide ranging and can often include benefits not only for the University but for the local St Andrews community.

In addition, the Russell Trust Awards (Postgraduate) may be made to students of St Leonard's College who require funds for travel in order to further a project connected with their research.

Most recently, The Russell Trust have shown their support for the University of St Andrew’s 600th Anniversary Campaign by providing extra funding for the Undergraduate Accommodation Bursaries scheme.  The Russell Trust has made available 10 extra bursaries each year for students from Fife and the local area who might otherwise find the costs associated with relocating to St Andrews prohibitive.

The support from The Russell Trust is a valuable and prized aspect of the bond that the University has with the people of Fife and we are extremely grateful for the vision of the Russell family that has enabled us to offer some excellent opportunities to staff, students and the wider community as a result of the trust’s generosity.
