St Andrews in the News

November 2015

Welcome to the November edition of St Andrews in the News – the monthly e-newsletter that keeps all our alumni, parents, donors and friends in the loop about current news, information and events.

Raisin Monday took place this year on 19 October – our leading photo illustrates the sheer exuberance of all the St Andrews students who took part in the celebrations. The person who made this outstanding dragon gets our vote for the most imaginative and inventive costume, but make up your own mind by checking out our online gallery on Facebook.

Launch of the St Andrews Hong Kong Foundation

The Principal and Vice Chancellor, Professor Louise Richardson launched the University of St Andrews Hong Kong Foundation at the residence of the British Consul General on the Peak this month. Donors, parents and graduates from 1968 through to 2015 joined the Principal and the British Consul General, Caroline Wilson to celebrate the Foundation which will strengthen our existing links with Hong Kong.

We were delighted to receive several founding gifts which were pledged on the evening in support of scholarships for students from Hong Kong, joint research and further collaborations between St Andrews and Hong Kong. In addition to their support for postgraduate scholarships in Economics and Biochemistry, George and Stella Lee have now generously established an endowed Wardlaw Scholarship for an undergraduate student.

Contact director.development@st-andrews.ac.uk for further information about the Foundation and how you can show your support.

Guardbridge development plans revealed

Drop in sessions were held at the Byre and at the Eden Mill Brewery at the development site in Guardbridge.

Chancellor's Circle

Alumni and friends of the University joined Lord Campbell of Pittenweem CH CBE QC at the gathering of the Chancellor's Circle on Saturday 7 November. The team from the Scottish Oceans Institute presented the world-leading work being done at the Gatty Centre and introduced guests to the plans for a new Gatty Multi-School Aquarium, Experimental Facility and Research Building.

The health of Scotland's youth

A study commissioned by the NHS and carried out by academics at St Andrews has found declining mental health patterns among 13–15 year-old girls.

The Principal Investigator for the study was Candace Currie, Professor of Child and Adolescent Health and Director of CAHRU (Child and Adolescent Health Research Unit) at the University. Among the headline findings, researchers noted an increase since 2006 – especially amongst 15 year-old girls – in young people feeling pressured by schoolwork.

A conversation with Jean-Pierre Jeunet

The renowned French film director of Amelie, Alien: Resurrection, Delicatessen and A Very Long Engagement appeared in conversation at Byre World last month as part of the University's new cultural events programme.

Byre World was conceived by the University's School of Modern Languages and its programme includes foreign language films, conversations with international figures from cultural and creative industries and informal literary cafés.
