St Andrews in the News

December 2015

Welcome to the December edition of St Andrews in the News – the monthly e-newsletter that keeps all our alumni, parents, donors and friends in the loop about current news, information and events.

It snowed - for one day! Our lead photo (by Management postgraduate Sanja Dotling) shows fellow postgraduate student Katharine Ganser making the most of it.

London Alumni Carol Service

The 11th annual London Alumni Carol Service took place on Wednesday 16 December at St Columba's Church in Knightsbridge. Almost 600 alumni, students and friends attended the service which was followed by a wine and mince pie reception in the church hall. Vice-Principal (International) Dr Anne Mullen delivered an address detailing the successful fundraising efforts undertaken by the University of St Andrews Alumni Club London since 2012, which has led to news that a second London Scholarship will be available at the University from September 2016.

To find out more about the University of St Andrews Alumni Club London, you can visit their new Facebook page or website.

The St Andrews Alumni Carol Service in St Salvator's Chapel also took place in December with a great turnout of local alumni. You can read all about it at our blog, Incomparabubble.

School of English staff making cultural waves

Two members of staff in the School of English have been making waves recently in the world of culture. Zinnie Harris has directed 'Tracks of the Winter Bear' – a new play that opened on 5 December at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, while Oliver Emanuel has written several episodes for the new Radio 4 series Blood, Sex and Money by Emile Zola starring Glenda Jackson.

Around the world on St Andrew's Day

What did you do to celebrate St Andrew's Day this year? Many of our alumni clubs around the world got into the spirit with our Cambridge Club holding their annual alumni dinner, the St Andrew's Ball in Hong Kong, a Scottish Ball in New York and drinks at the Dubai Marina Yacht Club (pictured above).

Meanwhile, in Uzbekistan, alumni posted their memories of their time in Scotland on the Uzbek Embassy's Facebook page

Sandy Mackenzie - local legend

We are saddened to report the sudden passing of Sandy Mackenzie – Bar Manager at the Students' Association. Known for his colourful and extensive collection of novelty ties, Sandy has spent the last 20 years working at the Union and helping hundreds of student events get off the ground. Sandy's funeral took place on Saturday 12 December where around 250 mourners attended before heading to raise a glass to Sandy in the bar named in his honour in 2014 at the Students' Association building.

Graduation addresses

You can still read the graduation addresses from this year's St Andrew's Day ceremonies as distinguished lawyer Professor The Rt Hon Sir David Edward, theatre director Vicky Featherstone and mathematician Professor Cheryl Elisabeth Praeger received their honorary degrees.
