Sally Mapstone appointed new Principal

Professor Sally Mapstone, currently Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education at the University of Oxford, is to be the next Principal of the University of St Andrews. Read more

University to provide 900 new student bedrooms

The University is to sanction investment of over £70 million in student housing and refurbish large areas of its existing residences to provide 900 additional bed spaces. Read more

Scorpions in Perth – 400 million years ago

Graduates Rosalind Garton (BSc 1978) and husband Richard Batchelor (MSc 1984) recently announced their discovery of a 400 million-year-old scorpion fossil. Read more

New study published on mother – child bond

A new study by Dr Kelly Robinson, a research fellow at the University's Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), has found that the hormone oxytocin plays an important role in keeping seal mothers and pups physically close following birth. Read more

RSE Honour for five academics

Five outstanding academics at the University of St Andrews have been awarded Fellowships of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE).

They are poet and Professor of Creative Writing John Burnside, Professor of Iranian History Ali Ansari, Professor in Physical Chemistry Sharon Ashbrook, Professor of Philosophy Katherine Hawley, and Professor of Marine Mammal Biology Peter Tyack. Read more

 

Make your mark on the arena!

We are delighted to announce that 400 bleacher seats – to be used during elite showcase sports fixtures, lectures and conferences – are now available for naming in the new Sports Arena. Take this chance to make your mark and contribute towards the redevelopment of the new Sports Centre by making a gift of £350/$500. Your name and a message of your choice will be inscribed on a seat as a permanent reminder of your support for sport at the University.

If you would like to name a seat please make your gift online here. If you are from the US you can make your gift here (and please remember to designate your gift to 'bleacher seats'). We will follow up with all donors by email to confirm inscriptions. Alumni Festival Weekend 2016: 15 – 17 April

The Alumni Festival Weekend 2016 programme is just one month away, with student clubs, societies and sports teams getting ready to welcome back alumni and former members.

There's a wide range of activities from rugby 7s and golf to performances in the new Students' Assocation theatre. Our vibrant student community will help you to roll back the years and relive your own student days!

As events continue to be added to the schedule, keep up to date by checking the Students' Association and Saints Sport websites regularly or through the Festival's Facebook page.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational 2016

Join us in St Andrews this summer on Saturday 25 June for a memorable golfing experience on The Castle Course, the newest addition to St Andrews Links at the Home of Golf, followed by a prize-giving dinner at the fantastic St Andrews Links Clubhouse. This one-day tournament will bring together alumni, parents, friends and supporters of the University's performance golf programme, Saints Golf. Read more

Across Canada by story: a coast-to-coast literary adventure

Douglas Gibson (MA 1966), the renowned Canadian publisher, is bringing his sell–out show Across Canada by story: a coast–to–coast literary adventure to the UK. Find out what the prize–winning authors he has edited and published are really like! As well–known Canadian author Alistair MacLeod says, 'No–one has done more for Canadian literature than this man, Douglas Gibson.'

Tickets are available for performances in St Andrews (Byre Theatre, Sunday 17 April) and London (Canada House, Trafalgar Square, Tuesday 19 April).

Douglas is using the tour to help raise funds for The Canada Room in the Students' Association.

Summer Shadowing Programme  

The world–wide Summer Shadowing Programme is back for 2016. During the winter programme over 130 students were offered the opportunity to make a great start to their career planning by observing alumni, parents and friends for a day at their place of work. Our students are always incredibly grateful for the support of the wider St Andrews community and we welcome opportunities from all over the world.

Glasgow
The Glasgow Alumni Club will be meeting on Saturday 16 April at 1pm for lunch and drinks at The Counting House (George Square, Glasgow) Please respond on Facebook or contact James Martin.

New York
The University of St Andrews New York Alumni Club will once again be marching in this year's Tartan Day Parade on Saturday 9 April. The Parade goes down 6th Avenue, and is a great opportunity for all our alumni communities in New York to celebrate their Scottish connection. This is not a ticketed event. Information about a happy hour afterwards will be forthcoming.

Save the date, too, for the Club's May Ball on Saturday 14 May at the Down Town Association. Tickets will be available from 1 April.

The Renaissance Singers – 60th Anniversary Concert

The Renaissance Singers celebrate their 60th anniversary on Saturday 30 April with a concert at St Salvator's Chapel involving the existing choir and returning alumni. For more details contact Tamsin Elsey.

MadGroup Reunion – 70th Anniversary reunion

Calling all former members of the Madrigal Group! Celebrate our 70th anniversary by joining us on Friday 27 May at 7.30pm for our Summer Tour Opening Concert and on Saturday 28 May at 7pm for a relaxed evening and sing-song. General Council Assessor to the University Court Position
Voting in the election to fill one vacancy for a four-year term from 1 August 2016 opened on 16 March and will close on 6 April 2016. All members of the General Council, excluding members of the University Senate, are eligible to vote. All those with a valid email address have been sent information on how to vote. Information about the candidates, the role of General Council Assessors and the online voting system is available on the voting website.
