Scottish Oceans Institute Building

Marine Science at the University of St Andrews has grown in scale and influence for over a century and today the Scottish Oceans Institute – based at the Gatty Laboratory at East Sands – is recognised as one of the most dynamic marine research centres in the world.

However, the current aquarium can no longer meet the needs of modern marine research and the original Victorian building is too small to house the interdisciplinary teams of scientists who are working on cutting-edge research projects.

To address this, the University has identified the new SOI as its most urgent capital project and planned a £15m project to develop the new Scottish Oceans Institute which will house a state of the art aquarium, research and teaching facilities and the first SOI visitor centre. This will create a global hub for marine research by bringing together research colleagues in one building, accommodating visiting scientists, allowing for a future expansion in students and academic staff and enhancing our facilities for outreach work.

A range of naming opportunities is available: from naming a Laboratory for £50,000 to dedication of the whole building for £7m.

We would be delighted to discuss your support of SOI with you.
