Giving FAQs

Can I make my gift anonymous?

Yes. All gift forms – no matter how you choose to make your gift – give you the option to make the gift anonymous. This means that your name will not be acknowledged in any print or electronic publications, although your gift will be added to published campaign totals.

Can I designate where my gift should go?

Absolutely. When you make your gift, simply complete the field on the print or electronic form indicated where you would like your gift to go. As per the Donor’s Bill of Rights, we will ensure that your gift is spent as you request. If you would like to make a gift to a fund or purpose not listed, simply select the “other” option and indicate how you would like your gift to be used.

Can I set up a recurring gift?

Our commitment to our donors is to establish methods of giving that follow domestic and international laws and best practices, and to ensure that donors can give safely and confidentially. Therefore, if you are a UK bank account holder, you may set up a recurring gift through direct debit, available as a printable form. If you are a US bank account holder, you can set up a recurring credit card gift to the University of St Andrews American Foundation through Network for Good.

Who should my cheque be made out to?

For UK and ROW donors, please make your cheque out to the University of St Andrews.

For US donors, please make your cheque out to the University of St Andrews American Foundation Inc.

Please send all cheques to Development in St Andrews.

To where should I send my cheque?

Please send all cheques, including those made out to the American Foundation, to the Development Office at:

Development
University of St Andrews
Crawford Building
91 North Street
St Andrews
Fife KY16 9AJ
Scotland

This will ensure efficient processing and accurate recording of your gift.

How can I be sure that my gift will be spent as I have requested?

The University of St Andrews has adopted a Donor Charter, which stipulates that all charitable donations must be designated as you, the donor, specify at the time of making the gift. If this is not possible, we will consult you immediately about redesignation or repayment. We frequently also send reports letting you know about the impact of your gifts to St Andrews.

Can I give online?

Yes. To make a secure online gift to the University of St Andrews in GBP, click here. To make a secure online gift in USD, you can make a gift to the University of St Andrews American Foundation (making a gift to the University of St Andrews American Foundation, Inc ensures that your gift will be tax deductible). In both cases your data will be held confidentially by our partners IATS and Network for Good and erased immediately when the transaction is complete.

Is my gift secure?

The University follows the guidelines of the Data Protection Act (1998) to ensure that your data is processed and stored with maximum security. You can review our policies here.

Can I get a receipt?

We acknowledge all gifts within 72 hours of their receipt.

Will my gift to the University be tax deductible in the US?

If you are a US tax payer, you can make a tax-deductible gift by making your gift to the University of St Andrews American Foundation Inc. The Foundation has been determined by the United States Internal Revenue Service to qualify, under sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(3) of the Internal Revenue code as a tax-exempt public charity to which tax-deductible contributions may be made. The American Foundation will send a receipt for any gifts it receives in a form acceptable to the IRS. In compliance with IRS regulations, the American Foundation retains complete discretion over allocation of gifts to the University of St Andrews.

What is the Gift Aid Scheme?

Gift Aid is a UK government tax scheme, which enables the University to claim tax relief on donations received from UK taxpayers. For every £1 donated, 25p is added - a £100 gift with Gift Aid is worth £125 to the University. In order for gifts to be eligible for Gift Aid, the donor must be a UK taxpayer who will have paid an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax at least equal to the tax that the University of St Andrews will reclaim on the gifts in the relevant tax year in which the gifts are made. The donor must sign a Gift Aid Declaration; this can either be open ended (applying to this donation and all future donations) or relating to a particular gift. This declaration is also available as part of our standard Gift Form.
