On the 30th May 2014 the School of Modern Languages hosted a one day Symposium on the contribution of Icíar Bollaín to Spanish-language cinema. Amongst her many achievements she has directed 6 feature films, each one of which receiving a number of film awards, acted in 31 films and voted Best Actress of the year in three of them. Students of the University, local Secondary Schools and the general public were invited. Attendance was excellent and about 80 people participated. The event was free thanks to the support of the Santander Universities funding for cultural events.

The event was anticipated by a weekly Wednesday screening of Icíar Bollaín films during the semester, open to all. On the day, participants were welcomed by Bernard Bentley, of the Spanish Department, who gave a brief overview of Icíar Bollaín’s work. This was followed by a talk from Professor Nuria Triana Toribio, from the University of Kent Hispanic Studies Department, on the important place of Icíar Bollaín as an innovative director in the context of Spanish cinema. The second talk by Dr David Archibald, from the University of Glasgow Department of Film Studies, dealt with the Cinematic representations of anti-fascist women in Spanish Civil War film with close-ups on Ken Loach’s film Land and Freedom (1995) in which Icíar Bollaín had an important part.

Lunch was followed by the screening of Even the Rain/También la lluvia (2010), Icíar Bollaín’s penultimate film nominated as the Spanish entry for the Oscars Academic Award of 2011. The film was introduced by the director and contextualised by Bernard Bentley. The highlight of the day was the open Question and Answer session with Icíar Bollaín, moderated by Bernard Bentley, which was drawn to a close after two hours of interesting and illuminating exchanges.

The event was supported by Santander with funding for Latin American and Spanish Arts projects.
